M7: Blog Post 6- Full Code Medical Simulation Game
Full Code Medical Simulation: Acute
Appendicitis
Full Code Medical Simulation is a
digital platform designed to improve clinical decision-making for all
healthcare professionals including registered nurses, emergency response crews,
physicians and even pre-medical students. This digital tool incorporates
gamification into various medical scenarios based on healthcare specialties and
patient case-based simulations. Users have to move swiftly and make quick clinical
decisions based on patient diagnoses and care situations. This game gives
immediate feedback based on user performance and offers a comprehensive library
that can be accessed by a subscription costing $12 a month for the full
library. The platform has two free case-based scenarios within the inpatient
specialty that are extremely common: acute appendicitis and a neurological
situation. Full Code allows for nursing educators to blend classroom
instruction and interactive learning with this digital tool. The acute
appendicitis case is especially valuable in nursing education when students are
learning about the gastrointestinal system as well as emergency nursing care. The
free game could be incorporated into this nursing lecture as homework and then
be further reinforced within the skills or simulation lab. When assigned as a homework
assignment, students could achieve a target score on the game. Since the game
has built-in scoring, it would allow for easy grading and competitive learning
among nursing students. To make the assignment more competitive, students could
be ranked by their initial score with a prize rewarded to the highest initial scorer.
The game based on acute appendicitis
not only reinforces critical components of the care of a client with this
diagnosis, it also reviews necessary laboratory and imaging tests, abnormal
assessment findings that correlate with the diagnosis, as well as the need for interdisciplinary
collaboration within the healthcare team to communicate abnormal findings and
prepare the patient for the operating room. Learning objectives for this gamification
assignment could be: 1) Understand and explain the pathophysiology of
appendicitis, 2) Interpret laboratory and imaging diagnostics consistent with
acute appendicitis, 3) Effectively communicate and create a patient care plan with
the healthcare team (general surgery and internal medicine), 4) Demonstrate
proper pain management and pre-operative care of the patient experiencing an
acute appendicitis. The game engages learners and tests their knowledge in a
very realistic, low-risk environment to build confidence in managing a common
yet potentially life-threatening condition leading to an appendix rupture. Once
the assignment is completed, students in small groups within the skills or
simulation lab can then “act out” the case-based scenario using real-life vital
signs machines, monitors, intravenous catheters, and nursing supplies required
for the care of the patient with acute appendicitis.
In order to bring this game to life, extra nursing support and supplies would be required when engaging students in learning within the simulation lab. Scaffolding of this learning activity would first begin with introducing the concept of acute appendicitis through traditional nursing theory lecture and assigned textbook readings that present the diagnosis along with clinical presentation and management. After this, students would then be assigned the Full Code simulation game for homework prior to their assigned small skills lab group instruction time. Students can discuss with each other and even nursing instructors about key decision points within the Full Code game. Part of the student score would be reflective of their targeted game score and their participation within the simulation lab. Once this is reinforced within the small groups within the simulation lab by students demonstrating the interventions they performed virtually, a debriefing session could occur within the lab to discuss clinical decision made and why. A learning activity that incorporated gamification in nursing care, promotes clinical confidence and healthcare team collaboration. By assessing game scores and performance within the simulation lab, students can see their scores and improve on managing patient care. Students are not just introduced to gamification using new literacies but also new student-led digital tools to assist with learning complex patient conditions. How good are you at recognizing and managing a patient experiencing an acute appendicitis?
